Rotorua is a place made for adventure. From its bubbling mud pools and naturally heated springs to epic mountain biking trails and outdoor-loving locals, it’s well worth a visit for anybody who wants to step out of their comfort zone. The Kaitiaki team love adventure – it’s what we live for! – so we’ve put together a 3-day Ultimate Rotorua Adventure Itinerary. Get inspired, then come visit us!
Start your time in Rotorua by lacing your hiking boots and heading off to explore mighty Mount Tarawera. Standing sentinel over Rotorua and the Bay of Plenty, Mount Tarawera is the volcano responsible for one of New Zealand’s largest historic eruptions. Now the mountain is dormant and safe to explore on foot. View the enormous red, rocky crater; sprint down the scree slopes and soak up views all the way out to White Island. We offer an unforgettable Mount Tarawera experience – you’ll also get to hear stories of local Maori myths and legends.
In the evening, head to Tamaki Maori Village and journey to the heart of Maori culture. Incorporating rituals, powerful cultural performances and a hangi – our ‘earth oven’ feast, you’ll come away knowing so much more about New Zealand’s indigenous culture.
Rotorua’s crystal-clear rivers and dense, emerald forests are home to a world-class rafting experience. Begin your day by rafting the Kaituna River, which incorporates Tutea Falls – the largest commercially raft-able waterfall in the world! This is an awesome way to get your adrenaline pumping. Paddle through steep native bush-clad canyons and over 14 thrilling rapids. Kaitiaki Adventures are Rotorua’s white water rafting specialists.
Did you know that Rotorua is a mountain-biking mecca? Hitting the trails is an awesome way to spend the afternoon. Whakarewarewa Forest is home to 145km of mountain bike tracks; offering grades 2 through to 5. It’s built by mountain bikers for mountain bikers, so it’s no surprise that it was rated best in the Southern Hemisphere by Red Bull. With trails that wind through lush native bush and towering Californian Redwood trees, the scenery is just as epic as the riding surfaces.
Wake up properly this morning by going Zorbing. Jump in an enormous inflatable ball, add a little warm water, and roll down a course on a steep hill. Random, yes, but so much fun and a real Rotorua adventure itinerary must-do.
Continuing with the water theme, finish your time in Rotorua by going Sledging. On floating water sledges, navigate more awesome rapids and play holes as you journey down the lower Kaituna River. You’re in charge of your sledge, propelled by flippers on your feet, and guides are there to encourage and motivate where necessary. We’re New Zealand’s sledging originals – sledge with Kaitiaki for an epic end to your Rotorua adventure itinerary.
There you have it – three incredible, adventure-filled days in Rotorua. We promise this place is like nothing you’ve ever experienced before. With a fun backpacker culture and awesome places to eat, Rotorua really is the full package.
