Before you begin your Crater Experience

Mount Tarawera Visitor Information

Before beginning your guided hikoi, we encourage you to learn more about the history, culture, and natural wonders of Mount Tarawera. This sacred maunga is famous for its dramatic 1886 eruption, which reshaped the Rotorua region, buried the Pink and White Terraces, and created the world’s youngest geothermal valley, Waimangu.

Today, Mount Tarawera stands as a powerful symbol of nature’s force and cultural significance to Ngāti Rangitihi, the iwi who hold kaitiakitanga (guardianship) of the mountain. Exploring its craters and ridgelines offers not just breathtaking views but also meaningful insight into the stories that connect people and place.

Such an exhilarating experience. We loved all the waterfalls and rapids, but we always felt safe with an awesome safety crew.
